Any sort of comparison between two players belonging to different eras spark a lot of rages, unchecked emotions and never-ending debate between cricket fanatics.
The comparison between two former Indian captains, Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni, is one such debate that never settles. There are countless arguments, rhetorics, and statistics backing each of them that fans love to flaunt in discussions.
Ganguly revolutionised the Indian team in the early 2000s, instilled aggression, courage and will-power in the squad. He left an everlasting legacy and a proven blueprint for the future generations to follow.
While Dhoni achieved everything that Ganguly failed short of in his days; he became the first captain in the history of the game to win all three ICC events as a captain.
Recently, veteran India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel has put forth his views on the Dhoni vs Ganguly debate in a chat show Cricket Connected premiered on Star Sports.
Patel stated that although Dhoni has more trophies to his name, Ganguly built the team in a tough time when nothing was going right for India.
“The competition is valid between the two captains. One captain has a lot of trophies while the other captain has built the team. When Sourav Ganguly became the captain after 2000, Indian cricket was going through a difficult time,” stated Parthiv.
“From there he built a team that won abroad, not that we are not winning earlier, but we won big Test matches abroad like Headingly, in Australia and then went to Pakistan and won the Test series,” he added.
The 35-year old said that Ganguly was a more impactful captain than Dhoni since the former built a team from scratch.
“If you talk about Dhoni, he has a lot of trophies. He is the only captain who has won so many trophies. In my opinion, if I have to cast my vote it would be for Dada because he built a team from scratch,” Parthiv said.
