India batsman Suryakumar Yadav will miss the upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka at home because of injury. He picked up on-field injury during the third T20I against West Indies in Kolkata on Sunday.

Suryakumar, the Player of the series for the T20Is, was standing in the slips when he suffered a hairline fracture in his right hand during the second innings after scoring a 31-ball 65 in the first essay.

With fast bowler Deepak Chahar already out of the squad due to hamstring injury, India are now left with 16 players in their camp.

“Deepak sustained a right quadriceps injury during bowling while Suryakumar suffered a hairline fracture during a fielding attempt in the third and final T20I against the West Indies in Kolkata on Sunday,” the BCCI secretary Jay Shah said in an official statement.

“They will now head to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for further management of their injuries,” he added.

Talking about Suryakumar, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma said: “A big setback. He was in great form but there are so many guys waiting for an opportunity. At the same time, I am sad for Surya. A freak injury. You can’t control these things.”

The three-match India versus Sri Lanka T20I series will begin on February 24.
