Team India thrashed Sri Lanka in the first Test at PCA Stadium in Mohali on Sunday to take the 1-0 lead in the two-match series. The hosts completely dominated the proceedings and crushed the visitors by an innings and 222 runs.
Following on from their first innings total of 174, Sri Lanka could only manage 178 in their second innings to lose the contest. Star all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin took four wickets each while pacer Mohammed Shami bagged a couple of scalps. During the second innings, Ashwin also leapfrogged legendary Kapil Dev to become India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test, after Anil Kumble.
Earlier, on Day 3, Jadeja claimed a five-wicket haul to help India enforce a follow-on on the tourists. Sri Lanka had resumed play from their overnight score of 108/4 and could only reach 174, to trail by 400-runs.
Jadeja, who shined with the ball in both innings, smashed a humungous unbeaten 175-run knock and declared their first innings at 574/8. Apart from Jaddu, Rishabh Pant also scored a scintillating 96, while Hanuma Vihari (58) and Ashwin (61) also hit half-centuries.
With the massive victory, Rohit Sharma became the second Indian captain to win his maiden Test by an innings after Polly Umrigar, under whom India had beaten beat New Zealand by an innings & 27 runs in Mumbai in 1955/56.
“I would say this is my lucky ground. Whenever I come here, I get positive vibes. Feeling very good, happy to score runs and pick wickets for the team. Obviously, as a player, you boost your confidence with such a performance. I have not done anything differently, just played to my strengths, and I give myself time to settle down. I look to keep it very simple out in the middle,” said Jadeja after the match.
Here is how Twitter reacted:

Well that’s what they call: total domination. Woah. And when I think back on this match I’ll think ‘Sir Jadeja’. What a show. What an absolute rockstar… as someone I idolise once called him. 🔥 #INDvSL

Jadeja misses the 10-fer but he can take comfort in the fact he’s the first player in history to take nine wickets & score 150+ runs in a Test #INDvSL

Ravindra Jadeja (175* and 9 wkts) just missed becoming the first player in Test cricket history to make a score of 150+ in an innings and also claim a 10 wicket haul in the same Test match. #IndvSL #IndvsSL
