Finn Allen’s brilliant batting and exhibition of top-class bowling from Tim Southee and Trent Boult helped New Zealand beat West Indies by 50 runs in the second ODI at Kensington Oval, Barbados, on Friday. With the victory, the touring party also levelled the three-match series 1-1.
Put to bat first, New Zealand were in a spot of bother after losing three wickets for just 31 inside 10 overs. Before the hosts could capitalize further, the visitors bounced back thanks to a brilliant partnership between Allen and Daryl Mitchell.
The duo added 81 runs for the fourth wicket before Kevin Sinclair dismissed Mitchell for 41. Allen, however, stayed in the middle and kept the scoreboard running.
The Auckland-born cricketer was cruising to reach the triple-figure score, but Jason Holder denied Allen of his maiden ODI century as the right-handed batter chopped on for 96. Mitchell Santner (26, not our) made a valuable contribution on down the order to take Black Caps to 212 in 48.2 overs.
In response, the West Indies were bundled out for just 161 in 35.3 overs to lose the contest by 50 runs. New Zealand’s senior pace duo of Southee and Boult did the maximum damage to propel their side to a series-levelling win.
While Southee picked up a four-wicket haul for 22 runs in seven overs, including a maiden, Boult bagged three wickets for 18 in six overs. For the home side, Yannic Cariah and Alzarri Joseph did fight back with an 85-run stand for the ninth wicket, but Southee knocked over Joseph for 49 to end the partnership.

Much better display today, particularly with ball. After scrapping to 212, propelled by Finn Allen’s 96, it was experienced duo Southee-Boult’s new ball spell that defined the match – reducing WI to 27/6
Still areas to improve on, mainly with bat going into that decider tomorrow pic.twitter.com/dkJwlspS3F
