Team India defeated Afghanistan in the Super 4 clash to finish their campaign in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022 on a high note. Put to bat first, the Men in Blue completely dominated the proceedings, posting a mammoth total on the board.
After more than 1000 days of wait, star batter Virat Kohli ended his century drought, smashing his 71st ton in international cricket. The former India skipper, who last scored a ton in November 2019, demolished the Afghanistan bowlers all over the park and brought up his maiden hundred in the shortest format.
With his ton, Kohli also joined Rohit Sharma in the elite list of batters who have smashed 100 T20I sixes and also equalled former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting for maximum centuries in the international arena.
Notably, Kohli opened India’s inning as regular skipper Rohit was rested. Team India got off to a flying start as Kohli and stand-in captain KL Rahul came out all guns blazing against the Afghans. The duo added 119 runs for the opening wicket before Rahul departed for 62. Kohli, however, remained unbeaten at 122 of just 61 deliveries with the help of 18 boundaries, including 6 sixes and propelled the team’s total to 212/2 in 20 overs.
In response, Afghanistan were completely bulldozed by Indian bowling, as they only managed to reach 111/8 in their allotted 20 overs, losing the contest by 101 runs.
Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar wreaked havoc at Dubai International Stadium, bagging a brilliant five-wicket haul for just 4 runs in his quota of 4 overs, including a maiden. For Afghanistan, Ibrahim Zadran was their top scorer with an unbeaten 64 from 59 deliveries.
