India defeated England in the opening ODI by seven wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the ongoing three-match series at County Ground in Hove on Sunday. Star batter Smriti Mandhana continued her excellent form and played another match-winning knock.

Mandhana, who was India’s leading run scorer during the recent three-game T20I series, carried on that effort, smashing a brilliant 91 off 99 deliveries to help India chase down 228 with seven wickets in hand.

Apart from Mandhana, Yasika Bhatia (50) and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (74 not out) slammed contrasting half-centuries to help the Women in Blue finish the proceedings with more than five overs remaining.

Earlier, Indian bowlers displayed utmost discipline to restrict the hosts at 227/7 in their allotted 50 overs. Deepti Sharma picked up two wickets for 33 in 10 overs, including a maiden, while veteran pacer Jhulan Goswami bagged one scalp but conceded only 20 runs in her quota of 10 overs with the help of two maidens.

For the English side, all-rounder Davidson Richards top-scored with 50 from 61 balls, while Daniel Wyatt also contributed well with 43 off 50 deliveries.
