England defeated Sri Lanka in their last Super 12 fixture to enter the semifinals of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 on Saturday. With the victory, defending champions Australia have been knocked out of the multi-team event.
Batting first, the Islanders were 80/2 at the halfway stage and were cruising towards a big total. However, the English team then bounced back and completely changed the scenario, as Sri Lanka only managed to reach 141/8 in 20 overs.
Apart from opener Pathum Nissanka, who smashed a brilliant 67 off 45 deliveries with the help of 2 fours and 5 sixes, no other batter was able to contribute well enough. For the three lions, Mark Wood was the pick of the bowler, bagging three wickets for 26 in 3 overs.
In response, England’s openers took their side to a flyer as the team scored 75 for no loss after seven overs. But then the wheels started to fall off a bit as England started losing wickets at regular intervals as the contest went down to the wire.
Ben Stokes, however, held fort on one end and kept rotating the strike with some odd boundaries and ensured England registered a victory by four wickets with two balls to spare. Stokes remained unbeaten at 42 while Alex Hales top-scored with 47 off 30 at the top.

If there is one player England would want batting in a tense situation, it would be Ben Stokes. A feeling of certainty around him.

Eventually, Ben Stokes' wisdom of experience of playing on slow turners helped out England.
As I observed before England need some old school batting here. Yes, they don't have Root but Stokes stood up.
SL? Their pacemen upfront let them down.

Ben Stokes was the only middle-order batter to score at a 100+ strike rate today on either side. Vital innings when England needed it to take them through to the semi-finals
