Pakistan defeated New Zealand in the first semi-final of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 at Sydney Cricket Ground to enter the finals.
Chasing the target of 153, Pakistan completely dominated the proceedings thanks to excellent knocks from captain Babar Azam and wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan. The duo took the game away from the Black Caps after forming an unreal 105 runs partnership for the opening wicket.
Babar smashed 53 off 42 deliveries with the help of seven fours, whereas Rizwan scored 57 from 43 balls, including five fours. Mohammad Haris also played a handy knock of 30 as Pakistan completed the chase with seven wickets in hand and five balls to spare.
Earlier, Daryl Mitchell and captain Kane Williamson guided New Zealand to a competitive score after Black Caps lost three wickets for just 49 in eight overs.
Mitchell and Williamson added 68 runs for the fourth wicket to stabilise the New Zealand batting. Williamson was dismissed at a well-made score of 46 off 42 deliveries, Mitchell was the star of the night with a brilliant unbeaten 53 from just 35 balls. Riding on Williamson and Mitchell’s batting, New Zealand managed to post 152/4 in their allotted 20 overs.
For the Men in Green, Shaheen Afridi shined with the ball. The left-arm fast bowler picked up two wickets for 24 runs in his quota of 4 overs.
