Chamika Karunaratne, the Sri Lankan all-rounder, has been handed a one-year suspension, banned from all cricket for a year, following misconduct during the recently-concluded T20 World Cup, the Island Nation’s board confirmed on Wednesday.

Karunaratne is the second player to be sanctioned by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) for T20 World Cup misconduct. Middle-order batter Danushka Gunathilaka was suspended earlier this month after being charged over a rape case by the Sydney Police.

Karunaratne has also been fined US $5000 for breaching “multiple clauses” during his stay in Australia.

“Considering the seriousness of the violations committed by Mr. Karunaratne, the Inquiry Panel by its report has recommended to the Executive Committee of the SLC to strongly warn the player to refrain from further violations and to impose a punishment that will not have an impact on his cricketing career,” SLC said in an official statement.

“Subsequent to the said findings and recommendations of the inquiry panel the Executive Committee of SLC has handed a one-year ban from taking part in all forms of Cricket, and the said ban will be suspended for a period of one year.”

Karunaratne played seven matches in the 2022 T20 World Cup, picking up three wickets with minimal batting opportunities to make an impact.
