Shoaib Akhtar, former Pakistan pacer, has expressed his desire to see India and Pakistan compete in the final of the ODI World Cup 2023, which will be hosted by India. He also stated that he hopes the Babar Azam-led Pakistan cricket team will avenge their 2011 World Cup semifinal loss to India this year. In the 2011 World Cup, Shoaib was part of the Pakistan squad but did not feature in the playing XI in the semifinal, which they lost by 29 runs against India in Mohali.
“I want an India vs Pakistan final, whether they are playing in Mumbai or Ahmedabad. 2011 ka badla lena hai is baar (Want to avenge the loss of 2011 semifinal). Pakistan landing in India will be bigger news than the World Cup,” Akhtar was quoted as saying to Sports Tak.
The Rawalpindi Express further added that the Pakistani team’s visit to India for the 2023 World Cup would be significant news in itself, overshadowing the tournament. He believes that cricket can help bring the two countries together and improve relations between them.
However, the ex-cricketer also criticized both the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for making unnecessary comments regarding the Asia Cup 2023. He believes that both boards should consult their respective governments before making any decisions. The BCCI has expressed its reluctance to send the Indian team to Pakistan for the Asia Cup, while the PCB has threatened to boycott the 2023 ODI World Cup in India if India does not participate in the Asia Cup 2023.
“These are trash talks. Neither BCCI or PCB can do anything in this matter. BCCI can’t do anything without asking the Indian government. Our board also can’t do anything without consulting our government. Everyone gives their opinion when it comes to the India-Pakistan tie,” added Akhtar.
“I have a request to all the former players from both sides; please stay away from making unnecessary comments. If Narendra Modi-led government will give the green light, who is BCCI to decide that they will travel to Pakistan.”
