On Day 4 of the ongoing 5th Ashes Test between England and Australia at The Oval, the cricket world witnessed an emotional moment as Stuart Broad, the veteran England fast bowler, walked out to bat for the last time in Test cricket alongside his teammate, James Anderson.

The day’s proceedings began with the news of Broad’s retirement from the sport. After the conclusion of Day 3, the Nottinghamshire pacer had announced that the ongoing Ashes Test would mark the end of his Test career.

Australian players gave a ‘Guard of Honour’ to Stuart Broad

England began Day 4 with a second innings total of 389/9 on the board, already holding a substantial lead of 377 runs over Australia. As the players made their way to the crease, Broad walked down to the stairs, accompanied by Anderson.

Upon his arrival at the crease, a touching moment unfolded as the Australian team paid tribute to Broad’s remarkable career. The Australian players formed a Guard of Honour, showing their respect for the seasoned cricketer. The spectators at The Oval responded with a deafening standing ovation, acknowledging Broad’s immense contributions to the sport.

Broad hits a six in his final Test innings

In what would be his final moment with the bat in the longest format, Broad displayed his characteristic flair as he dispatched a delivery from Mitchell Starc over deep mid-wicket for a resounding six. It was a fitting reminder of the talent and skill that had made him a formidable all-rounder in Test cricket.

With Broad’s six and Anderson’s dismissal in the following over, England’s innings came to a close at 395, setting a target of 384 for the World Test Champions, Australia, to chase in the final Test match. Australia now faces a monumental task to clinch the Ashes series with a successful chase of 384. Notably, the highest successful fourth-innings chase at The Oval stands at 263, a record dating back to the distant year of 1902.
