Joe Root, the eminent England batter, has issued a compelling warning to competitors about the formidable duo of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the lead-up to the ODI World Cup 2023. Their exceptional performances in the ongoing Asia Cup serve as a promising omen for the Indian team as they gear up for the forthcoming 50-over mega event, scheduled to be held in India from October 5.

Rohit and Kohli shine with the bat in the ongoing Asia Cup

Rohit, aged 36, holds the distinction of being the top run-scorer in the ongoing continental trophy. He has accumulated an impressive total of 194 runs at an outstanding average of 64.67. On the other hand, Kohli, who will reach the age of 35 in about two months, has also been in remarkable form, amassing 129 runs in the tournament at an average of 64.50.

Root advocates strong support for Kohli and Rohit

Now, During a recent interview with The Times of India, the former England captain Root emphasized the danger of overlooking players like Kohli and Rohit because of their age. To illustrate his point, he pointed to Chris Gayle as an example.

“I think it’s very dangerous just to write off players like Virat and Rohit because of their age. Look at how long Chris Gayle, for example, played T20 cricket. Some of the best players in the world have gone longer, especially in T20 cricket, and have been wonderful with their performances. As long as you’re fit, you go on and play,” Root said.

The 32-year-old also drew attention to the remarkable longevity and performance of England’s leading fast bowler, James Anderson.

“Jimmy Anderson is a perfect example you look at. He is over 40, he’s still performing exceptionally well. We’re very fortunate that we’ve not lost out on that because we think he’s too old. He’s still playing and he’s still leading our attack. And we’re using all that experience and skill to our advantage. We’re seeing him as a talent and ability and a wonderful player on his own,” the Dore-born concluded.
