In a remarkable display of power-hitting, England all-rounder Ben Stokes etched his name into the record books by smashing an astonishing 182 runs off 124 balls during the third One-Day International (ODI) against New Zealand at the Kennington Oval in London on Wednesday.

Stokes’s incredible performance catapulted him to the highest individual score ever recorded by an English player in the ODI format.

Stokes Surpasses Jason Roy’s Record

Stokes’s heroic knock eclipsed the previous record held by Jason Roy, who had scored 180 runs in a memorable ODI encounter against Australia back in 2018. Stokes’s dominant display with the bat was characterized by an aggressive approach, featuring nine sixes and 15 fours, amounting to a total of 24 boundaries in his innings.

The 3000-Run Milestone

Apart from breaking the record, Stokes reached another significant milestone during his swashbuckling knock. He became the newest member of the 3000-run club in ODIs, underlining his all-round excellence in the limited-overs format.

Stokes’ Departure

Stokes’ sensational innings came to an end in the 45th over when he attempted to clear the mid-wicket boundary off Ben Lister‘s delivery but was caught in the process. His departure marked the conclusion of an extraordinary display of batting prowess that had the crowd on the edge of their seats throughout.

England’s Batting Display

England’s batting performance, spearheaded by Stokes, saw them amass an imposing total of 368 in 48.1. The innings witnessed a mixture of fortunes, as opener Jonny Bairstow departed without scoring a run off the very first ball. Dawid Malan contributed a valuable 96 runs before being caught by Tom Latham off a delivery from Trent Boult. However, Joe Root had a brief stay at the crease, accumulating just four runs before Stokes took centre stage.

New Zealand’s Uphill Task

With England posting a formidable total of 368, New Zealand now faces a monumental task of chasing down 369 runs to secure victory in the match. The series is currently tied at 1-1, with England registering a victory at the Rose Bowl on Sunday, while New Zealand claimed the first win of the series in Cardiff after following England’s 291 with an impressive 297-run total.
