In a recent video released by Star Sports India on their social media platforms, former South African captain and renowned fielding sensation, Faf du Plessis, has ventured his prediction regarding the highest run-scorer in the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023.
Throughout his international career, Du Plessis has achieved numerous milestones and remained a consistent run-scorer for South Africa, before announcing his Test retirement in February 2021. Meanwhile, he played his last ODI against Australia in Manchester on July 6, 2019. Since, then the Proteas selectors didn’t pick him for any series including the 2021 and 2022 T20 World Cups, despite Du Plessis scoring runs at will in leagues across the world.
Faf du Plessis’ choice
Talking to the official broadcasters of the ODI World Cup 2023, Du Plessis expressed his thoughts into who he believes has the potential to dominate the list of leading run-getters at the marquee event. His pick for this prestigious accolade was none other than India’s batting maestro, Virat Kohli.
Currently ranked 9th in the ICC ODI batting rankings, Kohli has his sights set on an even loftier goal – breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most centuries in ODIs. The former Indian captain smashed his 47th ODI century against Pakistan at the 2023 Asia Cup and inched closer to Tendulkar’s remarkable tally of 49 ODI hundreds.
As it stands, Kohli has amassed a staggering 13,083 runs in his ODI career, boasting an impressive average of 57.38 and a formidable strike rate of 93.78.
