India vs Netherlands betting preview

The final match of the 2023 Cricket World Cup group stage sees hosts India taking on the Netherlands at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. India has a 100% record in the group stages, and a win over the Netherlands would see them become the first team to sweep the whole group in the 10-team round-robin format.

Attempting to stop India from finishing with a perfect record are the Netherlands, who will be looking to land another big scalp. Beating South Africa by 38 runs in match 15 has so far been the highlight of the competition for Scott Edwards’ team. Defeating the hosts and the betting favourites would surely eclipse that. And depending on results elsewhere, it could see the Dutch finish in the top eight and qualify for the Champions Trophy in 2025.

📝 India vs Netherlands betting odds

As betting on any sporting event goes, this is as one-sided a market as you can get. In general, all the top cricketing nations would have very short odds to beat the Netherlands. But as India is sweeping all opponents aside at this Cricket World Cup, their odds to beat Scott Edwards’ Netherlands team are ridiculous, with some sportsbooks going as short as 1.01 on an Indian win.

In more relevant markets for India, top cricket betting sites now have them at 1.80 to win the World Cup outright for the third time in their history.

India vs Netherlands predictions

In World Cup terms, this match is a dead rubber. India has topped the group, and the Netherlands are already out. But with a clean sweep there for the taking for India and a place in the 2023 Champions Trophy possibly at stake for the Netherlands, neither side will take the fixture lightly.

India may decide to give one or two of the lesser-used players in their squad a run out just in case they are needed later in the competition. Ravi Ashwin or one of the seamers, Prasidh Krishna or Shardul Thakur may get a match on Sunday. But on the flip side, with the team having momentum, the powers that be may decide to leave well enough alone.

The batting lineup is certainly working well. And with Rohit Sharma looking like a different player, and Virat Kohli arguably in the form of his life, there is little reason to make changes.

The Netherlands will have mixed feelings about the World Cup. Except for being bowled out for just 90 against Australia, they haven’t done too badly. Wins over South Africa and Bangladesh from their eight matches so far are good going. They did fall away in their most recent fixture against England, letting Ben Stokes let loose. But in general, the tournament has gone well, and they may well leave India feeling they might have won one or two other matches.

A win over India would change all that and ensure that the competition is a resounding success. But another humiliating loss, similar to the Australian one, would mean Scott Edwards and his team exiting India on a sour note.

📊 India vs Netherlands key stats

  • India and the Netherlands have only played each other twice in One Day Internationals. India have won both matches
  • Both matches were at the Cricket World Cups. The first was in South Africa, back in 2003. On that occasion, India won by 68 runs. The second meeting was at the 2011 World Cup in India, with the host nation winning by five wickets.
  • In the current World Cup, India has three batters with more runs than the top scorer for the Netherlands. Virat Kohli leads the way with 543 runs, Rohit Sharma has 442, and Shreyas Iyer has 293.
  • The top scorer for the Netherlands is Sybrand Engelbrecht with 255 runs. Captain Scott Edwards has 242 runs.
  • India has five bowlers with double-digit wickets in the competition. Mohammed Siraj has 10, Kuldeep Yadav 12, Ravindra Jadeja 14, Jasprit Bumrah 15, and Mohammed Shami has picked up an astonishing 16 wickets in just four matches.
  • The top wicket-takers for the Netherlands are Bas de Leede with 14, Logan van Beek with 12, Paul van Meekeren with 11, and Aryan Dutt has 10.

India vs Netherlands betting tips

The above records for runs and wickets don’t look too far apart. But when you examine the statistics in closer detail, you quickly realise the gulf in class is huge. Virat Kohli is averaging 108.60 with the bat. Rohit Sharma has a strike rate of 122.77, and he has scored 442 runs. Scott Edwards, at 40.33, has the highest average of any Netherlands batter (even two England batters have higher averages).

No Netherlands bowler averages under 28 runs per wicket. Mohammed Shami averages 7.0, with Bumrah averaging 15.53 and Jadeja 17.35. With India’s odds of winning so short, these are the areas we need to focus on for our betting tips. As let’s face it, we won’t be retiring to luxury yachts by backing India to win this match.

The wicket at Bengaluru has been good to bat on. This is where Australia scored 367/9 against Pakistan, and New Zealand racked up 401/6, also against Pakistan. If India bats first, expect the batters to fill their boots. If the Netherlands bat first, the Indian bowlers should be in business.

1. The Netherlands to hit more Sixes – 8.55 @ Cricbaba

No, I haven’t taken leave of my senses, but you will need to bear with me on this one. India has hit 54 sixes at this World Cup, and the Netherlands have hit 24. Of India’s 54, Rohit has hit 22, and Shreyas Iyer 11.

Okay, Rohit has almost beaten the Netherlands total on his own. But if he gets out early, we could be in business. The chances are the Netherlands will want to go down making a statement, so they may go out swinging wildly. And my final point with this bet is this. India is 1.14. The Netherlands are 8.55. Who would you rather back at those odds?

2. India innings overs 0-5 over 34.5 runs – 2.74 @ Bettilt

Probably a more sane bet, this one is. We were tempted to go with over 29.5 runs at 1.84, but such is the strike rate of Rohit Sharma, we feel that it’s worth taking the extra risk for the bigger reward.

This bet covers us whether India bats first or second. If the host nation bats first, they will look to impose themselves on the Netherlands attack. England, yes England, batting first, were 42/0 against the Dutch after five overs in their match on Wednesday. If India bats second, they may be chasing a low total and could go after it quickly.

3. Aryan Dutt to be top Netherlands bowler – 3.7 @ Rajabets

Another tip with the first 10 overs in mind, allowing us to cover the prospect of the Netherlands batting or bowling first.

India doesn’t lose many wickets, so picking up one or two could win this bet. If India bats first, the bet is harder to win, as the Netherlands will likely be chasing leather for 50 overs. If India bats second, chasing a small total, one wicket could be enough to win this bet.

At odds of 3.70, Dutt is better value than his opening bowling partner, Logan van Beek (2.90), who went all around the park against England in the power play on Wednesday.
