India and Sri Lanka meet in Match 33 of the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup on Thursday. India has won six from six, and a win here will confirm their place in the semi-final. Sri Lanka needs to win this and at least one of their remaining two matches just to have a chance of making the last four. And even then, they will be relying on other results.

India vs Sri Lanka betting preview

📝 India vs Sri Lanka betting odds

In their most recent outing, India defeated England by 100 runs in a scrappy low-scoring match on Sunday. The English attack limited India to 229/9 when the tournament hosts batted. But like in their other four defeats, England imploded with the bat, and India eventually cantered to a comfortable victory.

Sri Lanka may have thought they had turned a corner when they defeated England by eight wickets in Match 25 of the competition. But they came crashing back down to earth with a bump on Monday when Afghanistan thrashed them by seven wickets with 28 balls remaining.

The Lions are now on the verge of elimination, a theory backed up by the latest World Cup winner odds. Online cricket sportsbooks make Sri Lanka 176.0 to win the trophy for the second time in their history. India are the favourites at 2.0.

The hosts are also heavy favourites to win this match.

India vs Sri Lanka predictions

This will be the third match of the 2023 Cricket World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium. The two matches played here so far have resulted in two comprehensive wins for South Africa.

In Match 20, the Proteas racked up 399/7 batting first against England, eventually winning by a mammoth margin of 229 runs. Then in Match 23, the South Africans – again batting first – scored 382/5 against Bangladesh, winning by 149 runs.

In the match against England, Jos Buttler won the toss and elected to bat first. In the match against Bangladesh, South Africa won the toss and opted to bat first. In general, we would predict whoever wins the toss will bat first on Thursday. But if it’s India, Rohit Sharma could have a dilemma.

So far in this World Cup, India has batted second in five of their six of their matches. Only against England did they have to bat first and set a score.

India won the toss in their matches against Pakistan and New Zealand, and on both occasions opted to field first. Based on how South Africa has performed batting first at the Wankhede Stadium, will India change tactics and bat first if they win the toss?

On that day, five Sri Lankans registered ducks, and four others didn’t make it into double figures.

2023 Cricket World Cup betting tips

India vs Sri Lanka betting tips

Looking at the recent head-to-head records, it is difficult to see any positives to take for Sri Lanka. And when you factor in the form of both sides at this World Cup, the Lions’ task looks even greater.

But as we all know, sport doesn’t always work like that, and there could be a glimmer of hope for Kusal Mendis and his team. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been in top form at this World Cup. But contributions with the bat elsewhere haven’t been great. But then stopping those two Indian batters looks almost impossible, and even if you do, Jasprit Bumrah has been brilliant with the ball in hand.

Sri Lanka could be due a win. But it would be a very brave punter who bets on them to end India’s winning streak at this World Cup. India has to be the bet to win. Now let’s look at some alternative bets.

1. Mohammed Siraj to be player of the match – 13.0 at Rajabets

We usually prefer going with an all-rounder when it comes to Player of the Match bets. But on this occasion, we feel that we can’t overlook Mohammed Siraj given his performances in two of his last three matches against the Sri Lankans (4/32 and 6/21).

2. Sadeera Samarawickrama to be top Sri Lanka batter – 4.9 at Cricbaba

Sadeera Samarawickrama scored 36 against Afghanistan and 65 not out against England. He didn’t top score in either match, but he wasn’t far off. He is his country’s top run scorer at the 2023 Cricket World Cup, and at 4.9 to top score against the hosts, he looks like a solid selection.

3. Virat Kohli to score 43.5 or more at 1.89 with Bettilt

Virat Kohli has been outstanding at this World Cup. So far, Kohli has recorded scores of 85, 55 not out, 16, 103 not out, 95, and zero. He will want to bounce back from his duck against England. And in general, quality players like that won’t fail twice in succession. We can see him bouncing back against Sri Lanka with a score on Thursday.
