India started their T20 World Cup campaign with a victory in their first warm-up match against hosts Australia at The Gabba in Brisbane on Monday.

After being asked to bat first, the Men in Blue posted 186/7 in their allotted 20 overs, thanks to tremendous knocks by opener KL Rahul and middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav. While Rahul smashed 57 from just 33 deliveries with the help of 6 fours and three sixes, Suryakumar scored 50 off 33 balls, including 6 fours and a maximum.

However, former skipper Virat Kohli couldn’t do much with the willow and fell against a short ball bowled by Mitchell Starc for only 19 from 13 deliveries. While Kohli failed to contribute with the bat, the Delhi-lad did an excellent job in the field to run-out Tim David.

It all happened in the 19th over of the Australian chase when Josh Inglis tapped a slower delivery by Harshal Patel towards the on-side to squeeze a quick single. But, Kohli had some other plans; he swooped on the ball, picked it with his right hand and threw it at the strikers’ end to cut short David’s stay in the middle.

Speaking about Australia’s innings, the hosts were looking solid in their chase but lost momentum in the final five overs to fall six runs short of India’s total.

Captain Aaron Finch led from the front, smashing a brilliant knock of 76 runs from 54 balls, including 7 fours and three sixes but a consistent fall of wickets in the death overs pulled Aussies out of the game. India pacer Mohammed Shami bowled an excellent final over, conceding only 4 runs and picking up three wickets.
