India dominated Australia on Day 3 of the fourth Test in Ahmedabad courtesy of Shubman Gill’s blazing ton and Virat Kohli’s resilient half-century knock. The host made the Aussie bowlers sweat hard on Saturday (March 11), and are currently in a great position with Virat Kohli (59) and Ravindra Jadeja (16) still on the crease.

Resuming the play on 36 on the second day, India lost skipper Rohit Sharma (35) with just 72 runs on the board. But from there on, Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara took the matter into their own hands and stitched a 115-run stand for the second wicket. The 23-year-old Punjab cricketer putting the Australian bowlers on the bay slammed his maiden ton at home. He scored flawless 128 of 235 balls, including twelve fours and a six. Meanwhile, Pujara also scored a convincing 42 of 121 deliveries.

However, after Gill’s century, Pujara fell prey to Todd Murphy and was dismissed Leg Before Wicket (LBW) in the 61st over. Coming out to bat on no. 4, Virat took a moment to congratulate Gill for his ton and shared a laugh with the right-handed batter. Following Pujara’s wicket, the Delhi cricketer kept the moment light by giggling and punching Gill on the chest as a gesture of lauding.

This was Gill’s overall second hundred in the Test format, and he also became the second youngest opener after KL Rahul to reach the three-figure mark against Australia. Notably, Rahul had achieved the feat back in 2015.

Talking about the match, India finished the day on 289/3 in 99 overs. Meanwhile, Matthew Kuhnemann, Nathan Lyon and Murphy were the bowlers to bag wicket for the Australian side. Stepping back onto the field on Day 4, the hosts will look to carry the momentum and diffuse the lead set by the visitors as they currently trail by 191 runs with two days of play remaining.
