India’s star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin found himself at the centre of a spirited debate when he supported Jonny Bairstow‘s controversial stumping during the second Ashes 2023 Test match at Lord’s in London. Amidst the controversy, Ashwin received mixed reactions from fans and critics.

Although many supported Ashwin’s stance, some criticized him for his take. Among all, Indian journalist Rajdeep Sardesai also questioned the Tamil Nadu cricketer’s stance on the issue. However, Ashwin responded with a sarcastic remark to Rajdeep that soon went viral over the internet.

It is worth mentioning that a major debate regarding the ‘Spirit of Cricket’ had ensued after Alex Carey stumped out Bairstow with an underarm throw on the final delivery of the 52nd over during the Lord’s Test. The incident divided the cricketing fraternity, with opinions ranging from praising Carey’s quick thinking to criticizing Australia’s actions. In the midst of the spirited debate, Ashwin stepped forward to defend Carey and the Australian team.

Attempting to challenge Ashwin’s stance, Indian journalist Rajdeep confronted him on Twitter and asked the latter if he would have appreciated being dismissed in a similar fashion to Bairstow. However, Ashwin’s savage response left the journalist taken aback.

“Sorry to bang on about this but I do love the game.. To my friend @ashwinravi99 and all those who believe that Johnny Bairstow was fairly OUT .. I have a simple Qs: would you be happy if you were given out in that way? That’s the real test. Do unto others what you would do to yourself! #Bairstow,” wrote Rajdeep.

Known for his witty comebacks, Ashwin responded to the Rajdeep’s question with a blunt reply and said he would be disappointed with himself for getting out in that fashion.

“I would be disappointed, very disappointed, in fact gutted with myself for getting out like that,” replied Ashwin.
