The 2023 ICC ODI World Cup is scheduled to be held in India from October 5 to November 19. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has recently released the final schedule for the tournament, with nine matches undergoing date changes from the originally planned timetable.

Over the last decade, a pattern has emerged where host nations have displayed a remarkable streak of winning the prestigious World Cup trophy. This trend began in 2011 when India secured victory as the host nation. Subsequently, in the 2015 World Cup co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, Australia emerged as the champions. Continuing this sequence, England claimed the title in the 2019 World Cup, held on their home soil. They managed to overcome New Zealand in a closely contested final game, led by the inspirational captaincy of Eoin Morgan.

Host nation clinches the last three 50-Over World Cups

Aakash Chopra, a respected cricket commentator and analyst, shared his insights and predictions through a video posted on his YouTube channel. In his analysis, Chopra asserted that India are the frontrunner and considered the favourite to win the upcoming marquee event on their home grounds. He based his prediction on recent performances by host nations in ICC events.

The 45-year-old points out that the advantage of playing in familiar conditions can significantly impact a team’s performance. When a team competes on their home turf, they are more accustomed to the pitches, weather, and other playing conditions. This familiarity can lead to a higher level of comfort and better execution of game plans.

“India are the favourites. Because it is happening at home, they will definitely be the favourites and if you see the last three World Cups – Australia won in Australia, England won in England, and before that India won in India,” Chopra said.

“It is absolutely right for the home team to be the favourites because we have seen the home team win the last three 50-over World Cups. So, of course, India are one of the favourites,” the former Indian opener added.

Chopra’s prediction for the four semifinalists

Chopra has predicted his top four semifinalists for the mega tournament ant they are: Pakistan, England, Australia and India. He also opined that New Zealand could spring a surprise with their performance.

“They (India) are the frontrunners but apart from them, the three other semi-finalists could be Pakistan, whose ODI team is very good, England and Australia. I feel you might see these four teams playing in the semi-finals,” the Agra-born cricketer said.

“I will be slightly surprised if any of them does not play the semi-finals, although you do get slightly surprised when the World Cup happens. The New Zealand guys are saying that they are also coming and it is an ICC event,” Chopra concluded.
