The upcoming World Cup 2023, scheduled to commence on October 5, will take place in India. Notably, this marks the first instance where India stands as the sole host of the event, as opposed to being co-hosts with other sub-continental nations in the past (in 1987, 1996, and 2011). Given their two-time championship history and home advantage, Men in Blue is inevitably considered one of the top contenders for the title. It is worth mentioning that the past three editions of the tournament have seen the host nation emerge victorious: India in 2011, Australia in 2015, and England in 2019.

Ashwin uncovers opposition’s tactic of labeling India as a top contender

Despite this, Ravichandran Ashwin holds a distinct viewpoint. Ashwin’s perspective is that many teams might strategically label India as the favourites to win the upcoming quadrennial event. This tactic serves to alleviate pressure from those teams and redirect the spotlight onto India. By positioning India as the frontrunners, other teams can manage expectations and create a situation where they can play with less pressure and scrutiny.

“I know people around the world of cricket will keep saying India are favourites. All the cricketers worldwide will use this as a strategy and say India are favourites before every ICC event; they use this strategy to reduce their pressure and put extra pressure on us. India could be one of the favourites,” the 36-year-old said in a video on his YouTube channel.

Moreover, Ashwin also discussed the other teams’ possibility of emerging victorious in the upcoming marquee event. The Chennai-born cricketer proceeded to mention that Australia stands out as a credible contender for the championship. Ashwin offered his perspective that allowing the Indian team to enter the World Cup with reduced pressure could play a significant role in their performance.

“But Australia are also a powerhouse. We spoke about the second ODI loss in Barbados. I mentioned that we should back Team India and send them pressure free to the World Cup. Most agreed, but some of them were like, ‘Looks like he is already being cautious about what will happen if Team India doesn’t win and blaming everything on the fans,” Ashwin concluded.

The Indian team will initiate their World Cup campaign by facing the Australians in Chennai on Sunday, October 8th. The host nation will undoubtedly be eager to commence the tournament with a favourable beginning.
