In 2011, under the astute leadership of MS Dhoni, the India cricket team achieved a historic milestone by winning the ICC ODI World Cup. This triumph held profound significance for Indian cricket and its fans, marking the end of a nearly three-decade-long wait for another World Cup victory. The last time Men in Blue had claimed this coveted title before this was in 1983, under the captaincy of Kapil Dev. Dhoni’s captaincy during this tournament not only secured his place as one of India’s most successful leaders but also fueled the nation’s passion for cricket.

Dhoni’s role as the captain:

Dhoni’s captaincy during the 2011 World Cup was marked by his cool, composed, and strategic approach to the game. The Ranchi-born cricketer exhibited remarkable leadership skills, making crucial decisions under pressure. His tactical acumen and ability to read the game set him apart as a captain par excellence. Dhoni led by example, both as a captain and as a batter, with his iconic match-winning innings of 91* in the final.

The team’s collective effort:

While Dhoni’s leadership was pivotal, the 2011 World Cup win was also the collective effort by the entire Indian cricket team. The squad featured exceptional talents like Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh  and Zaheer Khan, each contributing significantly to India’s success. The team displayed remarkable unity, camaraderie, and spirit throughout the tournament.

AB de Villiers’ insights:

Now ahead of the ODI World Cup 2023, former South Africa captain AB de Villiers, a cricketing legend in his own right, has shared valuable insights about the significance of team effort in winning World Cups. He emphasized that cricket is fundamentally a team sport and that attributing World Cup victories solely to individual players is a misconception. De Villiers cited examples like Dhoni and Ben Stokes, highlighting that their stellar performances were made possible by the collective contributions of their respective teams.

” Cricket is a team game, it’s not a player lifting the World Cup. I see that way too often on social platforms. MS Dhoni did not win the World Cup, India won the World Cup, so keep that in mind. Don’t forget that. Ben Stokes did not lift the trophy in Lord’s back in 2019, it was team England.” De Villiers said on his YouTube channel.
