Australia, fresh from a dominant 3-0 whitewash in the T20I series, are now shifting its focus to a crucial five-match ODI series against South Africa. This ODI series holds immense significance as it provides the perfect platform for Australia to fine-tune their preparations ahead of the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023. Leading the charge for Australia in the ODIs will be Mitchell Marsh, who has had a successful start to his leadership stint during the T20Is.

However, Australia will have to contend with the absence of several key players. The experienced Steve Smith is currently recuperating from a wrist injury, while the pace spearhead Mitchell Starc has been given a much-needed rest to aid his recovery from groin soreness. Additionally, Glenn Maxwell is unavailable due to an ankle injury. To bolster the squad, Spencer Johnson has been called up as a replacement for the rested Starc.

Australia’s top-choice XI for the ODI series against South Africa

Opening Pair:

Australia’s opening pair for the ODI series consists of David Warner and Josh Inglis. David Warner, a seasoned campaigner, brings explosive batting to the top of the order. His ability to dominate bowlers in the powerplay overs and provide a quick start is invaluable. Alongside him, Josh Inglis  is a valuable addition to Australia’s batting lineup. Inglis has showcased his talent in various T20 leagues around the world, and his explosive batting makes him a potent force in the ODI format as well. His adaptability to different situations and his capacity to accelerate the scoring rate make him a key asset for Australia .

Middle Order:

The middle order is anchored by Marnus Labuschagne, Travis Head and Alex Carey. Labuschagne is a versatile batter who can adapt his game to different situations. He provides stability in the middle overs and can accelerate the scoring when required. Travis Head, known for his powerful strokeplay, adds firepower to the middle order. He is capable of both stabilizing the innings and scoring quickly, making him a valuable asset. Carey, a wicket-keeper batter, strengthens the middle order. His ability to read the game and build partnerships is vital. Carey’s presence also offers an extra dimension to the team’s wicket-keeping options, ensuring depth in this department.

All-rounders:

Australia boasts a strong all-round department with Marsh (c)  Marcus Stoinis and Ashton Agar. Mitchell Marsh, also the captain, is a genuine all-rounder. He can contribute significantly with both bat and ball, providing balance to the team. Marcus Stoinis, another versatile all-rounder, adds depth to the squad. Stoinis is known for his ability to pick up crucial wickets with the ball and finish innings with the bat. Ashton Agar, a left-arm spinner, bolsters the all-rounder category. He can provide crucial breakthroughs with the ball and contribute valuable runs down the order. This trio forms a dynamic all-round combination that strengthens Australia’s chances in the series.

Bowling attack:

Australia’s bowling attack features a mix of pace and spin. Johnson, the new left-arm bowling sensation, leads the way. His ability to swing the new ball and take early wickets is vital.
