In a remarkable display of spin bowling, Sri Lankan spinner Dunith Wellalage dismantled India’s star-studded batting top order. The 20-year-old spinner added the big wickets of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli to his name and put the Indian team in a big turmoil as they face co-hosts Sri Lanka in the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup 2023.

All three batters, who starred against Pakistan in a thumping 228-run victory, could not spark any charm against Sri Lanka as Wellalage’s phenomenal spell sent them to the pavilion.

Talking about the game, India won the toss and elected to bat first. The opening duo of Rohit-Gill provided a solid foundation for the Indian innings, accumulating a promising 80-run partnership for the initial wicket. However, the momentum began to shift as Sri Lanka’s spinners took control, causing a notable batting collapse.

‘Top-order collision’

Shubman Gill became the first prey to Wellalage, as on the first delivery of the 12th over, he tried to play around a fuller length ball, which eventually hit the stumps. Rohit, who completed his half-century and was looking in good touch, was dismissed off a ripper from the left-arm spinner.

Meanwhile, Virat, who delivered a spectacular innings of 122 runs against Pakistan and was named ‘Player of the Match’ was dismissed by Wellalage as he tried to flick the ball away, but in turn, gave a simple catch to Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka at short mid-wicket.
