Pakistan‘s disappointing run in the ODI World Cup 2023 continued as they faced a defeat against Australia at Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday. The Men in Green, after conceding 367/9 on the scoreboard, were unable to chase down the formidable target, ultimately losing the contest by 62 runs.

Imad Wasim raises concerns over captain Babar Azam’s performance

Following Pakistan’s lackluster performance, senior all-rounder Imad Wasim raised eyebrows with critical comments about the team’s captain, Babar Azam. The criticism stems from Babar’s underwhelming performance and form during the match.

Expectations were high for Babar to take charge and lead Pakistan to victory, but the right-handed batsman was dismissed after scoring only 18 runs in 14 balls. Imad also pointed out that Babar has not secured a victory for Pakistan against a top-tier team since the 2019 ODI World Cup.

“At the world stage, there’s pressure, but it’s also the platform where you prove your worth. I think the last time Babar performed in a significant match was against New Zealand in the 2019 World Cup when he scored a century. However, since then, he has not been able to secure a significant victory for Pakistan. This isn’t criticism but a fact,” stated Wasim during an interview on Haarna Mana Hay.

Babar has potential to dominate: Wasim

Imad emphasized that, as the number one batsman, it is Babar’s responsibility to win matches, and the scrutiny will intensify if he fails to perform. He noted that Babar possesses the ability to dominate bowlers and emphasized that the World Cup is the perfect stage for him to exhibit his prowess.

“Being the number one batsman in ODIs, it is Babar’s responsibility to secure victories. Questions will naturally arise if he fails to do so. He needs to adapt his batting style according to the team’s requirements. He has the potential to dominate bowlers, and this World Cup is the ideal opportunity for him to showcase that ability,” Imad added.
