In Match 21 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at Dharamshala’s HPCA Stadium, India took on New Zealand, and a peculiar on-field scenario caught the attention of cricket fanatics. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were seen engaged in an animated discussion during the first innings of the game.

The unusual Rohit-Virat discussion

The incident occurred during a break between the 31st and 32nd over, precisely at a juncture when the batting pair of Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell displayed their exceptional batting prowess, dominating the Indian side.

Amidst this partnership, Virat was observed engaged in a conversation with Rohit, gesticulating with hand motions as if to signal modifications in the fielding arrangement. Conversely, Rohit appeared to be inclined towards adhering to the existing plan and continuing to observe the developments on the field.

Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell’s brilliance lights up New Zealand’s batting

After winning the toss, India chose to bowl first. Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami controlled the initial ten overs, limiting New Zealand to 34/2.

But then, Ravindra and Mitchell shone with their bats, forging a remarkable 159-run partnership for the 3rd wicket, putting significant pressure on Team India. Ravindra survived two close calls during his impressive 75 off 87 balls, but was eventually dismissed by Shami in his second spell. Mitchell notched his 5th ODI century and played a staggering knock of 130 runs in 127 balls.

However, when Mitchell needed support from the other end, Indian bowlers mounted a strong comeback in the death overs, taking quick wickets and restricting the Blackcaps to a potentially subpar total of 273.

Shami finished with a five-wicket haul in his first game of the 2023 World Cup.
