Following India’s victory over Afghanistan in the ODI World Cup 2023 game on Wednesday, October 11, Virat Kohli, the star Indian batter, had a comical response when Shardul Thakur was designated as the best fielder in the dressing room.

Positioned at the backward square leg boundary, he showcased extraordinary skill and presence of mind. Before crossing the boundary rope, he cleverly flicked the ball back into play, ensuring he was still within the field of play when he completed the catch.
This exceptional fielding feat played a significant role in India’s victory, aiding in the early removal of one of Afghanistan’s most dangerous batters. Consequently, Afghanistan concluded their innings at 272 for 9 after their full 50 overs. India, in turn, achieved a resounding victory by chasing down Afghanistan’s 273-run target with an abundance of eight wickets and a substantial 90 balls to spare.

In a video uploaded by BCCI on social media platform, the Indian players naturally reveled in their triumph, and their jubilation was palpable in the dressing room. T. Dilip, the fielding coach, heaped praise on players like Ishan Kishan, Thakur and Hardik Pandya for their exceptional contributions in the field. However, it was Thakur who clinched the title of the finest Indian fielder of the match.
The announcement led to a humorous moment. Kohli, who had previously received this accolade for his fielding display against Australia, found himself in fits of laughter that he could hardly control. He approached Ravindra Jadeja, sharing a lighthearted moment and relishing a hearty laugh with his teammate. Kohli then presented the award to Thakur, who accepted it gleefully and playfully showcased it to the team captain, Rohit Sharma.
“That catch was I think at the crucial period because Hardik took a chance by bowling the bouncer and we needed a wicket a that stage. Very happy to convert that catch,” Thakur said after receiving the medal.
