During his spectacular journey at the Indian Premier League (IPL), Australian cricketer David Warner has witnessed a remarkable rise in his salary.

Though Warner has announced his retirement from Test and ODI cricket, he will continue to ply his trade for Australia in T20Is and his respective franchises in the shortest format of the game.

Today, let’s delve into the breakdown of Warner’s IPL earnings since he made his debut in 2009.

Analyzing David Warner’s IPL salary evolution since debut

2009 – 2013: Early stint with Delhi Daredevils

David Warner’s IPL journey commenced in 2009 when he was signed by the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals). During this period, Warner established himself as a dynamic opening batsman, showcasing his explosive batting skills. His initial IPL salary was INR 15 lakhs. He played for the Delhi franchise for 5 years before moving to Sunrisers Hyderabad.

2014 – 2017: Sunrisers Hyderabad era begins

In 2014, Warner was bought by the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) franchise, marking the beginning of a prolific association.

Warner took over the captaincy of SRH in 2015, leading the Orange Army to their maiden IPL title . This leadership role, combined with his exceptional batting performances, led to consistency in his IPL salary.

From 2014 to 2017, Warner earned INR 5.5 crore per IPL season.

2018 – 2019: Brief suspension and comeback to the IPL

Warner faced a brief suspension in 2018 due to the ball-tampering scandal. However, he made a strong comeback in 2019, displaying his resilience and cricketing prowess. His performances justified his salary, and SRH continued to value him highly.

2021: Removal from captaincy and the team

In IPL 2021, Sunrisers management removed Warner from captaincy without citing any particular reason. Ahead of the players’ auction in 2022, they parted ways with the Aussie superstar.

Warner was paid an annual salary of INR 12.5 crore that year.

2022 – 2024: Comeback to the Delhi franchise and retention

Warner has maintained his high standards in the IPL and, therefore, he was roped in by Delhi Capitals during the IPL 2022 auction for INR 6.25 crore.

His dynamic style of play and ability to lead from the front have solidified his status as one of the most valuable players in the IPL. In the absence of regular skipper Rishabh Pant, Warner was named the Delhi captain ahead of IPL 2023.

He will continue to represent DC and earn a handsome salary of INR 6.25 crore after his participation in the upcoming season.
