In a stellar display of cricketing prowess, Joburg Super Kings inflicted a crushing six-wicket defeat on Pretoria Capitals in Match 13 of SA20 2024 at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. The Faf du Plessis-led side dominantly outshined their rivals in every facet of the game, marking their first win in the ongoing cricketing extravaganza.

Super Kings dominated the Capitals’ top order during the powerplay, securing four crucial wickets. Despite the pitch being favourable for batting, the Capitals’ top order exhibited poor performance. Kyle Verreynne emerged as the standout batter, crafting a splendid unbeaten knock of 72 runs from 52 balls and anchoring the innings confidently.

On the bowling front, the Kings showcased excellence, particularly in the initial overs. Lizaad Williams and Nandre Burger delivered a formidable with the new ball, claiming 3 and 2 wickets respectively. However, concerns arose in the death overs as the Kings’ bowlers faced challenges.

While effective in the middle overs with three wickets, Romario Shepherd proved a bit expensive in this match. Despite the bowling challenges, the Kings benefited from crucial contributions from Adil Rashid and Hardus Viljoen, concluding their innings at 167-9 in 20 overs.

Donovan Ferreira runs riot in run-chase

In pursuit of 167,  Super Kings encountered early setbacks as Reeza Hendricks and Du Plessis succumbed to the crafty bowling of Will Jacks. Despite the challenges, Leus du Plooy and Sibonelo Makhanya displayed resilience, maintaining a brisk scoring pace until Rashid’s crucial wicket disrupted their partnership. Makhanya (40), falling shy of a half-century, added to the team’s fortunes.

The middle-order duo of Donovan Ferreira and Moeen Ali then took centre stage, assuming the responsibility of accelerating the scoring in the latter part of the innings. Ferreira’s extraordinary innings, marked by a record-breaking century in a mere 18 balls, turned the tide decisively in favour of super Kings. Their spectacular efforts paved the way for a triumphant victory, with the hosts sealing the win with two overs to spare.
