As the cricketing world eagerly awaits the second Test match between India and England in Visakhapatnam, all eyes are on the potential debut of India’s rising star, Rajat Patidar.

Stepping into the shoes of the iconic Virat Kohli, who pulled out of the first two games against England, Patidar has a big responsibility on his shoulders. Representing Madhya Pradesh in domestic cricket and donning the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) jersey in the IPL, Patidar has earned his spot in the Indian squad with some stellar performances.

Patidar’s recent ODI debut on the South Africa tour in December 2023 has further added to the anticipation surrounding his Test debut. Having spent significant time in the RCB dressing room alongside Kohli, the young cricketer is now expected to showcase his talent on the international stage.

Rajat Patidar’s admiration for Virat Kohli and desire to learn from him

In a recent video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Patidar expressed his elation at receiving a Test call-up. He conveyed what it means to him to represent his country at the highest level. However, what caught the attention of cricket enthusiasts was Patidar’s heartfelt admiration for Kohli.

Patidar openly lauded Kohli for his exceptional footwork and body movement, acknowledging these as key elements that set the former Indian skipper apart. In the video, Patidar also shared his desire to incorporate these skills into his own playing style, emphasizing the impact Kohli’s techniques have had on him.

“I always observe his batting from the back of the nets. Especially his footwork and body movement while batting. I enjoy his batting. I want to add on those skills. It is not easy but I am relentlessly after it,” said Patidar

As he steps onto the international stage, Patidar is not just focused on personal achievements but is also keen on imbibing the skills that have made Kohli a cricketing legend.

High expectations

With Kohli temporarily stepping aside, Patidar finds himself in a unique position – a chance to prove his mettle at the highest level while carrying the expectations of fans and teammates alike. The cricketing fraternity eagerly awaits to see if Patidar can seamlessly transition from domestic and white-ball cricket to the demanding format of Test cricket.
