In a recent encounter between Quetta Gladiators and Islamabad United during the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2024, Hawk-Eye made an error while making a decision, leading to a contentious call during the match.
Rilee Rossouw survives due to Hawk-Eye error
The incident unfolded in the 11th over of the Gladiators’ innings. Quetta’s skipper, Rilee Rossouw, attempted a sweep against Agha Salman but missed, prompting an LBW appeal from the bowler. Initially ruled out by on-field umpire Aleem Dar, Rossouw opted for a review. However, Hawk-Eye’s ball-tracking system indicated that the impact was outside the off-stump, resulting in the reversal of the on-field decision.

Shadab Khan blames technology for this loss
I think technology was at fault a different ball was shown (on the ball tracker for the Rilee Rossouw review). These small mistakes shouldn't be happening in such a big tournamentpic.twitter.com/cidxUB7el5

Hawk-eye issues apology to PCB
Following the error, Hawk-Eye sent an apology letter to the PCB Chief Operating Officer Salman Naseer, acknowledging that the ball tracking for the reviewed delivery did not accurately represent the trajectory of the actual delivery.
“Hawk-Eye has acknowledged the system correctly tracked the delivery in question for the Decision Review System (DRS), displaying the impact as umpire’s call and the wickets as hitting. However, due to an operator error, incorrect ball tracking data was aired, resulting in an incorrect outcome,” stated a PSL media release.
The statement further mentioned that the accurate tracking information would have been accessible just moments after the incorrect data was displayed, and Hawk-Eye expressed its apologies for the error.
Islamabad United skipper Shabad Khan vents his frustration
Amid the controversy, the Islamabad side lost the contest by three wickets. Chasing 139 for victory, the Gladiators reached the set target in the penultimate over. Rilee Rossouw, who got a life line due to the Hawk-Eye error, played an unbeaten knock of 34 runs.
In the post-match presentation, the United skipper Shadab Khan vented his frustration over the error that cost his side the game.
“I think technology was at fault for this loss. We were shown a different ball as to the review. I bowled 4 overs as a leg spinner, it wasn’t turning much. This one showed impact outside off and spinning away further. In a big tournament like this, there shouldn’t be such mistakes,” Shadab said.
