The thrilling encounter between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2024 witnessed a moment of controversy that has reignited the debate on sportsmanship. The focus shifted from the nail-biting finish to the conduct of young KKR pacer, Harshit Rana, whose exuberant celebration after dismissing SRH opener Mayank Agarwal drew criticism from legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar.
Dismissal and Divisive Celebration
Rana’s bowling prowess shone through as he dismissed Agarwal with a well-executed slower bouncer, derailing a potentially match-winning knock. However, it was his post-wicket celebration, involving a flying kiss directed at Agarwal, that stole the spotlight and sparked outrage, particularly from Gavaskar.

Sunil Gavaskar Calls for Composure
Renowned for his insightful commentary, Gavaskar didn’t shy away from expressing his disapproval. He emphasized the importance of composure and respect for the opponent, highlighting that such excessive gestures were unnecessary.
“Couldn’t see any of that earlier on when he was hitting you for boundaries. No need to do that Mr. Rana. It’s just a wicket in cricket. The batter didn’t do that to him when he was hitting boundaries,” said Gavaskar during his commentary stint for Star Sports.
Pressure of Television Era?
Gavaskar acknowledged the pressure to perform for viewership in the television era. However, he stressed that such theatrics directed at the opposition were unnecessary. “I know we are all in the television age. We need to be seen doing certain things. You can play cricket without doing that. By all means, celebrate. Celebrate with the team. But, there’s no need to do that to an opposition player,” Gavaskar added.
Redemption Through Bowling Heroics
Despite the controversy surrounding his celebration, Rana emerged as the hero for KKR. With just 12 runs to defend in the final over, Rana displayed nerves of steel after conceding a massive six off the first ball. He held his composure, conceding only two more runs and taking the crucial wickets of Shahbaz Ahmed (16 off 5) and Heinrich Klaasen (63 off 29) in the remaining five deliveries, securing a four-run victory for the Knight Riders.
