IPL 2024: Here’s why Virat Kohli’s dismissal against KKR wasn’t given a no-ball
Virat Kohli's Controversial Decision

Tensions escalated at Eden Gardens during the clash between the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 as Virat Kohli, the former captain of RCB, expressed strong discontent towards the umpires after a controversial dismissal in Sunday’s match. The dismissal of Kohli sparked significant debate on social media and within the cricketing community. Kohli found himself out in a manner that led to widespread discussion.

Virat Kohli fumes after controversial decision

During the match, KKR pacer Harshit Rana delivered a full toss that Kohli struck just above waist height. The bowler then completed a catch to dismiss Kohli. Despite reviewing the decision, the on-field umpires upheld their original call, and Kohli was given out. This dismissal sparked a heated discussion between Kohli and the umpires.

The rule states that a no-ball occurs when the ball is delivered above the batter’s waist height at the popping crease. However, the batter’s position also matters. In Kohli’s case, the ball was indeed above his waist height when he struck it, but he was standing outside the crease at the point of contact. Technology assessed the ball’s trajectory and determined that if Kohli had been inside his popping crease, the ball would have passed him at a height of 0.92 meters. Since Kohli’s waist height was measured at 1.04 meters, the delivery was legal.
