During the 41st match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won the toss and set Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) a target of 206 runs. RCB achieved this total through impressive innings from Virat Kohli (51 off 43), Rajat Patidar (50 off 20), and Cameron Green (37 off 20).
SRH, renowned for their strong batting lineup in previous IPL matches, were expected to chase down the target comfortably. However, their power hitters faltered against RCB’s bowling attack. Even Travis Head, the Australian batter who has been in stellar form, managed to score only one run before getting dismissed by Will Jacks. Consequently, SRH suffered a 35-run defeat.
Former South African cricketer Herschelle Gibbs commented on the team’s disappointing loss, particularly highlighting Head’s poor outing in the match.
Herschelle Gibbs jabs at Travis Head’s performance
SRH’s defeat against RCB marked their first loss in their last 5 games. In their previous match against DC, SRH amassed 266 runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Following the game, SRH openers Head and Abhishek Sharma humorously remarked that they hoped to see a ‘3’ at the beginning of the score next time, indicating their desire to target a total of 300 runs. However, their esteem became a mockery when SRH failed to chase 207 runs.
This prompted Gibbs to take a swipe at Head. The 50-year-old took to X and expressed that chasing 207 runs on a slow track would have been just as impressive as scoring 300 runs in the first innings.
“I know Travis Head said he wants 300 but chasing 207 on a slower wicket would have been just as skillful,” Gibbs wrote on X.

RCB keep their playoffs hope alive
Despite encountering challenges throughout the IPL season, RCB remains active in contention for a playoff spot. Buoyed by their recent triumph over SRH at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, the team led by Faf du Plessis is confident about finishing in the top four. However, Bengaluru’s path to the playoffs will not be straightforward, as their qualification prospects hinge on winning all of their remaining games and depend on the results of other teams.
