Murali Vijay, one of India’s most underrated opening batters and the star of the 2014-15 Australian test tour, celebrates his 40th birthday today. The Monk of the Indian Cricket team remained in the spotlight on the field with his top-class innings and off the field with his amusing statements and comic stunts. One such incident occurred when he asked Australian legend all-rounder Ellyse Perry for a date.

The incident dates back to 2020, when Vijay was asked during an interview to whom he would choose to go for dinner. He took no time in responding and named Perry as his partner.

During the lockdown period, Vijay came live on Instagram and joined the Chennai Super Kings session. When he was asked by the anchor whom he would pick for going to dinner, answering the question, he first named Shikhar Dhawan but quickly changed his words and named Australian legend Ellyse Perry for it. “Shikhar Dhawan any day. He is a fun guy. Just that he will speak Hindi and I will be conversing in Tamil. Ellyse Perry! I want to have dinner with her. She is so Beautiful!,” replied Vijay.

Not more than one week after it, a sweet reply came from the Aussie star. In an interview for Sony Sports Network, Perry erupted in joy after she was informed about Murali’s statement and said, “I hope he is paying the bill (laughs). That’s very kind of him. I am flattered.”

Fans loved both of these statements, which became a hot topic of discussion on social media.

Beyond batting and social media fame, Vijay has also forayed into commentary. He, along with Subramaniam Badrinath, Lakshmipathi Balaji and Krishnamachari Srikkanth, are part of Star Sports Tamil’s commentary panel for IPL 2024, bringing their expertise and veteran cricketer gossip to the biggest T20 league.
