In the Group A encounter of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, India clashed with Ireland at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Wednesday (June 5). In the game, Axar Patel exhibited his remarkable athleticism and fitness by executing a masterful catch to dismiss Barry McCarthy, a pivotal moment that underscored India’s dominance in the game.

Axar Patel’s spectacular catch dismisses Barry McCarthy

After India’s fast bowlers had already made significant breakthroughs with the new ball, captain Rohit Sharma opted to introduce spin into the attack in the 12th over. Axar wasted no time in making an impact, needing just two deliveries to leave his mark. He delivered a ball aimed at McCarthy, who attempted to flick it to the leg side to open his account. However, McCarthy’s shot only resulted in a top edge. The ball soared towards the right of the non-striker, where Axar, displaying remarkable agility, stretched out in a full dive to secure the catch with both hands, effectively dismissing McCarthy without him having added any runs to the scoreboard.

This dismissal also saw Axar reaching a significant milestone, his 50th wicket in T20 Internationals. He became the ninth Indian bowler to reach this landmark, joining an elite group that includes Yuzvendra Chahal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Ravi Ashwin, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja.

Dominant bowling performance by India against Ireland

Earlier, Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to field. Left-arm pacer Arshdeep delivered a stunning performance, claiming the wickets of both Irish openers in the third over. Ireland struggled to find their footing, managing only 26/2 in the powerplay. Hardik then entered the attack, striking immediately and partnering with Bumrah to reduce Ireland to a precarious 36/4. Pandya continued his fine form, ending with impressive figures of 3/27 from his four overs.

Gareth Delany provided some resistance with a quickfire 26 off 14 balls, hitting several powerful shots to add crucial runs to Ireland’s total. Nevertheless, the Irish batting lineup could not withstand the relentless pressure from the Indian bowlers and were eventually dismissed for 96 runs in just 16 overs.
