The 16th match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 saw the Netherlands and South Africa facing off at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. South Africa won the toss and opted to bowl first, a decision that proved highly effective as their bowlers dominated the match from the start.
Marco Jansen’s spectacular catch
South African bowler Marco Jansen showcased his exceptional fielding skills by taking a stunning catch to dismiss Max Odowd. The highlight of the match came on the fourth delivery of the fourth over. Ottneil Baartman bowled a short and wide delivery outside off, prompting Odowd to attempt a cut shot. The ball took a thick outside edge and flew quickly towards first slip, where Jansen dived to his left and took a one-handed blinder, sending Odowd back to the pavilion for just 2 runs.

Clinical bowling restrict Netherlands at a below-par score
South Africa’s bowlers maintained relentless pressure on the Netherlands’ batsmen, restricting the Dutch side to a mere 103/9 in their allotted 20 overs. Baartman was the standout performer, taking four wickets for just 11 runs.
Jansen also impressed with the ball, claiming two wickets for 20 runs, while Anrich Nortje contributed with two wickets as well. This disciplined bowling performance left the Netherlands struggling to build any substantial partnerships.
The evolving rivalry
The clash between South Africa and the Netherlands has evolved into an entertaining rivalry, fueled by the Proteas’ surprising losses to the Dutch side in their two recent World Cup encounters. This match added another chapter to their competitive history, with South Africa emerging as the dominant force this time around in the first innings.
