The ODI World Cup 2023 has been nothing short of spectacular thus far and has treated cricket enthusiasts to many thrilling matches and unforgettable moments. One such exciting went underway at the Aruj Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, where Australia went head-to-head with the Netherlands in a highly anticipated showdown.
However, there was a cloud of disappointment hovering over this encounter as Australia’s star all-rounder, Marcus Stoinis, was noticeably absent from the starting lineup of Australia.
The surprising news of Marcus Stoinis’ exclusion
The stage was set with both Australia and the Netherlands having already made their mark in the tournament. The Netherlands had secured a historic victory against South Africa, while Australia had bounced back strongly after two initial losses. The cricketing world eagerly anticipated this match to see how these two teams would fare against each other. Nevertheless, during the toss, the news broke that star Aussie all-rounder Stoinis would not be taking the field.
Reason behind Marcus Stoinis missing out on the game against Netherlands
The news of the exclusion of Stoinis was delivered by Australia skipper Pat Cummins during the toss. Cummins revealed that the 34-year-old cricketer was nursing a calf injury and was not fit to play.
Cummins further added that Cameron Green had been drafted into the playing XI to fill the void left by the all-rounder. Additionally, he also discussed the possibility of injured batter Travis Head making a comeback to the team but emphasized that it was still some time away.
“We will have a bat. Looks like a lovely wicket. The sun is out. Happy with the way we have played the last couple of games. The bridge is still too far for Head. Still would need a few more days. Stoinis has a niggly calf. Cam Green comes in. Looks like a good day to score runs,” said Cummins.
