In a high-octane clash of the ODI World Cup 2023 at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, Australia clashed with Bangladesh in a thrilling encounter that had cricket fans on the edge of their seats. The match showcased stellar performances from both sides, but it was Mitchell Marsh‘s scintillating century that ultimately guided Australia to a comprehensive victory.
Bangladesh’s decent batting performance
Asked to bat first, the Bangladesh innings kicked off with determination, and the openers put up a brilliant 76-run stand for the first wicket. Towhid Hridoy further led the charge with a brilliant 74 off 79 balls comprising five fours and two sixes. Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mahmudullah also provided valuable contributions with scores of 45 (57) and 32 (28), respectively. However, the fall of wickets at regular intervals hindered Bangladesh’s momentum.
Australian bowling brilliance
Australia’s bowlers showcased their skill and discipline, with Sean Abbott and Adam Zampa each claiming two wickets. Their efforts restricted Bangladesh to a total of 306/8 in 50 overs, setting the stage for an achievable target for the formidable Australian batting lineup.

Mitchell Marsh’s batting masterclass propels Australia to victory
Chasing a target of 307, Australia’s opening pair, led by David Warner‘s solid 53 (61), laid the foundation for a successful run chase. However, the star of the show was Marsh, who played a breathtaking innings of 177 runs off 132 balls. Marsh’s innings included an astonishing nine sixes and seventeen fours, illustrating his dominance over the Bangladesh bowling attack.
Steven Smith also played a crucial role, contributing 63 runs off 64 balls, as Australia reached the target with ease, finishing at 307-2 in 44.4 overs. On the other hand, Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman were the only bowlers to pick a wicket for Bangladesh.
With the win, the Aussie side ended their league-stage campaign with seven victories in nine games. Meanwhile, Bangladesh now find themselves at the eighth spot, creating uncertainty over their Champions Trophy 2025 qualification hopes.

The best part of Mitch Marsh scoring a century is often how happy it makes his teammates. Always a burst of joy and elation in the dressing-room and dug-out. Same here with Marnus punching the air & others standing with their arms aloft as he got there #CWC23 #AusvBAN
