Former Indian captain MS Dhoni has been a hot topic over the past few days. The 2011 World Cup-winning skipper didn’t have a great 2019 World Cup campaign with the bat. Talks about whether he should bid farewell to international cricket or not are also doing the rounds. The 38-year-old is currently on a two-month break and was recently busy serving the Indian Army.
In the meantime, former Indian opener Sourav Ganguly shared his thoughts on the wicketkeeper-batsman’s future.
“To be honest, I don’t know. It depends on the way the team management thinks, the way the selectors think. Obviously, Dhoni is not young anymore, so this decision comes in everybody’s life at some stage or the other. So, we will have to wait and see for another three or four months to understand where it goes,” Ganguly said in an exclusive interview with Sportstar.
Dhoni had made his international debut in 2004 under Ganguly’s captaincy. As per reports, the veteran had been told that going forward, 21-year-old Rishabh Pant would be preferred over him as the first-choice keeper.
According to Dada, everything now depended on the thought process of the selectors.
“Obviously, Rishabh (Pant) is in. He plays well. (But in the end), it all depends on the mindset of the selectors and what they think. It’s about whether they want to look at the future. Only time will tell.”
Both Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni have proved to be two of India’s greatest captains. Ganguly rebuilt a formidable Indian side and led them to several victories both at home as well as overseas. India went on to win the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy under the leadership of Dhoni.
