After India’s disappointing exit from the ICC World Cup 2019, there were discussions regarding splitting the captaincy across different forms of the game. BCCI put an end to those debates as they named Virat Kohli as the skipper for the tour of West Indies for all formats back in August.
In an interview with Aaj Tak, India’s 2011 World Cup hero Yuvraj Singh expressed his opinion on the issue. Yuvraj believes that the team management should only split the captaincy if current skipper Virat Kohli is feeling ‘overloaded’.
The southpaw suggested Rohit Sharma as the T20I captain for India in case of a split.
“Earlier, there used to be just two formats – ODI and Tests, so it was perfect to have one captain. Now there are three formats, and if Virat is feeling overloaded, maybe they should try somebody else for the T20 format. Rohit has been a very successful captain,” told Yuvraj.
“I don’t really know. They have to decide how much workload Virat can take. Do they need to try somebody else for T20? It completely depends on how they want to go for the future. Virat has been the best batsman. How to manage his workload? It is completely team management’s call,” Yuvraj added.
Rohit Sharma has been brilliant with his captaincy in the Indian Premier League. Under his leadership, Mumbai Indians have won the title four times, making them the most successful franchise of the tournament.
Team India is all set to begin their Tests campaign at home with three-match series against South Africa. As hinted by chief-selector MSK Prasad, Rohit might open the innings in the longer format too. The first Test will be played at Visakhapatnam on October 2.
