Bangladesh have announced their 17-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, starting later this month. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has also appointed Shakib Al Hasan the captain for the tournament as well as the T20 World Cup later this year.
Notably, Nurul Hasan was named the captain for the recent tour of Zimbabwe after Mahmud Ullah was removed from the position due to lack of results.
However, Shakib, who was already named the Test skipper after Mominul Haque stepped down, will now lead the side in the upcoming Asia Cup, the tri-series in New Zealand and the T20 World Cup.
Middle-order batter Sabbir Rahman, who last plied his trade for Bangladesh in a T20I game in 2019, has made his comeback to the squad. Similarly, senior cricketer Mushfiqur Rahim, who was rested for the T20I series against Zimbabwe, has also returned.
Known as Bangladesh’s run-machine, Litton Das is missing from the squad as he has been ruled out of the multi-team event due to a hamstring injury,. Further, Shoriful Islam, Munim Shahriar and Najmul Hossain Shanto were also not considered for the Asia Cup squad.
”Shakib al Hasan is the captain till the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup,” BCB cricket operation chairman Jalal Yunus told reporters.
”He admitted that he made a mistake (signing the deal with Betwinner News), and he said that won’t make any further mistake, and we are hopeful,” he added.
