The stage is set for the 2023 ODI World Cup, scheduled to take place in India from October 5 to November 19. This edition will mark the first time that the entire tournament will be held in India, adding to the excitement surrounding the event. The opening match will witness a clash between the previous finalists, England and New Zealand, on October 5.

Hosts India, led by Rohit Sharma, will kick off their campaign on October 8 in Chennai against Australia, setting the tone for an intense battle. Among the highly-anticipated fixtures, the India versus Pakistan encounter is scheduled for October 15 in Ahmedabad, promising a thrilling contest.

In the build-up to the mega event, former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has shared his insights and named the key players for both India and Australia. Drawing from his experience as part of the victorious 2011 World Cup-winning squad, Harbhajan identified Rohit and Shubman Gill as the crucial batters for India, whose performances will be pivotal in shaping the team’s success.

When it comes to the bowling department, Harbhajan highlighted the impact of star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, recognizing his ability to contribute with both bat and ball. Jadeja’s presence adds depth and balance to the Indian side, making him an important asset in their World Cup campaign.

“If I talk about India, it comes back to your opening partnership. A lot will depend on Rohit Sharma. Shubman Gill – I hope he is part of the team. It will be unfortunate if you don’t play him. I think Shubman Gill will be the key. He bats extremely well in Indian conditions. In bowling, Ravindra Jadeja, if he fires like we saw in the IPL, where he picked up more than 20 wickets,” said Harbhajan on Star Sports.

Shifting the focus to the Australian team, Harbhajan identified Cameron Green as a key player to watch out for, emphasizing the threat he poses with his all-round abilities. Notably, Green’s emergence has added significant strength to the Australian lineup, making him a potential match-winner in crucial situations.

In terms of the Australian bowling unit, Harbhajan singled out Adam Zampa as the biggest threat. Zampa’s variations and wicket-taking ability make him a formidable force in the Australian bowling lineup, capable of disrupting the opposition’s batting order.

“If you are talking about Australia, I would like to take Green’s name. Cameron Green will be very, very dangerous. He brings not just batting but also bowling and fielding – unbelievable talent. He (Green) has played in India. He played exceptionally well in the IPL. He knows the conditions and he can be very dangerous there. Then if you talk about Zampa, he can be another addition who can be extremely dangerous. I think these will be the key players for India and Australia,” added Harbhajan.
