Cricket South Africa (CSA) has been dealt a significant blow on the eve of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, slated to kick off in India on October 5. The Proteas’ campaign has taken an unfortunate turn with the news of Sisanda Magala‘s unavailability for the global cricket spectacle.
Magala, the right-arm fast-medium pacer, has been ruled out of the ODI World Cup due to an injury, confirmed by Proteas Men. The injury setback occurred during the third ODI of the recent series against Australia.
Double blow for the Proteas
Magala’s World Cup dream was cut short as he suffered a knee injury during his only appearance in the series against Australia. In that particular match, he managed to bowl just four overs before succumbing to the injury.
The absence of Magala will be a significant double blow for the South African team. Earlier reports also indicated that their premier pace bowler, Anrich Nortje, will miss the ODI World Cup 2023.

Andile Phehlukwayo to replace Magala, Lizaad Williams in place of Nortje
In the wake of Magala’s unfortunate injury, all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo has been selected as the replacement. Similarly, Lizaad Williams has been picked as the replacement of Nortje. Notably, Phehlukwayo showcased his potential during the final ODI against Australia at the Wanderers on Sunday.
During that crucial match, Phehlukwayo played a match-changing innings, scoring an unbeaten 39 from just 19 balls. This impressive display has positioned him as a strong contender to step into Magala’s shoes for the upcoming World Cup. Phehlukwayo has faced setbacks in his cricketing journey over the past couple of years. He went unsold at the inaugural SA20 Player Auction and lost his national contract. However, he has worked hard on his fitness and skills.
The Proteas side will begin their ODI World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka.
