The excitement is building as the ODI World Cup 2023 is just around the corner, scheduled to commence on October 5. With expectations running high, especially for top-performing teams, defending champions England are gearing up for a thrilling campaign under the leadership of Jos Buttler. As the English side prepares for the tournament with warm-up matches, Buttler has offered insights into his retirement plans on the eve of their first World Cup warm-up game.
The English team, led by Buttler, will begin their title defense against New Zealand. Buttler faces the formidable task of continuing the legacy left by his predecessor, Eoin Morgan, who led the English troops to World Cup glory in 2019.
Buttler’s retirement plans
Before England’s first warm-up clash against hosts India, Buttler has opened up about his retirement plans. While expressing his desire to continue representing England, the wicketkeeper-batter hinted that he may consider moving on from One Day Internationals (ODIs) after the conclusion of the ODI World Cup 2023.

“Hopefully, I will be playing for England a while longer yet. I know I’ve just ticked over to 33 but I don’t feel that old. I don’t think anything can quite replicate playing for your country. It’s a huge honor you don’t take for granted, but at the same time, I’m pretty calm. That’s where I’m at in my career. I’m excited for whatever is left. I still feel there are areas I want to improve and get better as a player, which is a nice place to be because it gives you desire and motivation,” stated Buttler, as quoted by Mail Sport.
Buttler acknowledged that there are now more opportunities for him as a player, and he intends to carefully plan his future commitments and schedule. He emphasized the importance of finding the right balance between international cricket and other opportunities.
“Whatever happens will work itself out. The landscape has changed a bit, and there are more opportunities now. It’s just a question of working out what fits for you moving forward and what’s best,” added Buttler.
