The England players were spotted donning each other’s jerseys ahead of the play on Day 3 of the fifth Ashes 2023 Test at the Oval on Saturday (July 27). However, it wasn’t just a random exchange or swapping.  The swap was done as part of the English team’s initiative to raise awareness and funds for those affected by dementia, a disease that robs individuals of their cherished memories.

The England cricket team in a heartwarming gesture decided to step up and partner with the Alzheimer’s Society, an organization dedicated to helping people living with dementia ahead of play on Day 3. The initiative was undertaken to shed light on the challenges faced by those suffering from the Alzheimer, as well as to promote understanding of the disease in society and raise funds.

The compassionate jersey exchange saw the English skipper, Ben Stokes sporting Jonny Bairstow’s jersey. The suit was followed by other teammates as well, with all players participating in the jersey swap. By donning each other’s jerseys, the English cricketers symbolized their collective support to people battling dementia and their families.

It is worth mentioning that the funds collected by this special day will be directed towards crucial aspects such as faster diagnosis, groundbreaking research, and the Alzheimer’s Society’s support services.

Ben Stokes shares his feelings about the initiative:

Stokes even expressed his feelings about the initiative and said, “The Ashes is one of the great sporting contests, and over the years, it has produced so many amazing memories for me and millions more. As a team, we want to entertain and make many more memories for cricket fans up and down the country. But we know that dementia affects far too many people and has a terrible effect on them and their loved ones. By teaming up with the Alzheimer’s Society, I’m pleased we can raise awareness and vital money to help end the devastation caused by dementia.”

On the other hand, Alzheimer’s Society CEO, Kate Lee, extended her gratitude towards the England team for their initiative and stated, “This Test match will enable us to provide help and hope to everyone living with dementia, by funding faster diagnosis, life-changing support, and vital research, making a massive difference to fans and players whose lives have been devastated by dementia.”
