In the 13th match of the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2023 tournament, MI New York (MINY) recorded an emphatic victory against Washington Freedom (WAF). After winning the toss at Church Street Park, MINY elected to bowl, putting WAF into bat.

Freedom started their innings on a decent note, with contributions from Matthew Short, Andries Gous and Mukhtar Ahmed. New Zealand international Glenn Phillips played a brilliant knock, smashing 47 runs off 35 deliveries, including 2 fours and 3 sixes. Captain Moises Henriques also contributed with 32 runs off 30 balls. However, some tight bowling from the New York side, especially by Kieron Pollard (2/33) restricted Freedom to 160-6 in their allotted 20 overs.

In reply, MINY came out firing as they chased down the target with authority. Shayan Jahangir and Monank Patel provided a solid start, but it was Nicholas Pooran who stole the show with a scintillating knock.

Pooran bludgeoned 62 runs off just 33 balls, including 4 fours and an impressive 6 sixes. The left-handed batter kicked off the ninth over with a massive six against Obus Pienaar. He followed it up with his first six, hitting the ball over long-off, narrowly avoiding the fielder. Pienaar, the left-arm spinner, persisted with his attack from around the wicket, but his half-tracker was effortlessly sent to the midwicket boundary.

Changing his angle to over the wicket, Pienaar offered a ball right in the slot outside the off-stump, which Pooran confidently dispatched over long-off for another six. The over turned out to be a massive one for MI New York, as Pooran’s aggressive display led to 22 runs being scored, virtually sealing the victory for his team.

Skipper Pollard also scored a quickfire 21 runs off 10 balls. MINY reached the target comfortably, scoring 161-2 in just 15.3 overs.

Pooran was rightfully awarded the ‘Player of the Match’ for his explosive batting display.
