There were many speculations going around regarding India appointing a new captain for the Ireland series in the past few months. The announcement of the Asia Cup preparatory camp in the last week of August has now further fuelled the same talk as India’s current T20I skipper Hardik Pandya and his deputy Suryakumar Yadav are also expected to be part of the training session.

It is worth mentioning that the Men in Blue are set to tour Ireland for a three-match T20I series commencing from August 18, with the third and final game scheduled on August 23. Meanwhile, Asia Cup preparatory camp begins just days after the conclusion of the Ireland visit.

With India’s head coach Rahul Dravid already making it clear to have all the team members in full attendance during the Asia Cup preparatory camp, the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) now seems to be left with no choice but to look for Pandya’s alternative who will not be available for the tour.

Can Jasprit Bumrah be appointed as India’s new skipper?

The best possible option that the Indian selectors now have is to appoint experienced Jasprit Bumrah as the team’s skipper for the Irish challenge. Bumrah’s appointment will not only help the Indian management to test the fitness of the seamer but will also serve as a perfect platform for Bumrah to mark his return with a workload of just four overs after being out of action for a brief period of time.

Speaking of Bumrah, the 29-year-old was out of action for almost ten months and even underwent back surgery in New Zealand to treat recurring fitness issues. He is currently training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru and is looking in fine touch.

As far as India’s schedule is concerned, the Indian team is currently in West Indies and will lock horns with the Caribbean side in a five-match T20I series starting from August 3 before leaving for the Ireland tour.
