In a significant turn of events, the Sri Lankan cricket team has been compelled to appoint a new captain for the remaining matches of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 as Dasun Shanaka has been ruled out of the tournament owing to a right thigh muscle injury.
The decision comes as a big blow to Sri Lankan, who are one amongst the four teams to have not won a game yet in the ongoing tournamnet. Shanaka’s absence will be keenly felt by the Islanders, especially in the upcoming crucial matches.
Chamika Karunaratne replaces Dasun Shanaka in the squad
Chamika Karunaratne, who was on the reserve list, has been added as a replacement player.
“Karunaratne, who has played 23 ODIs, was named as a replacement after Shanaka was ruled out due to a right thigh muscle injury sustained during Sri Lanka’s match against Pakistan on 10th October. The injury needs three weeks to recover,” said the ICC in its official statement after the Technical Committee approved a change in the Sri Lankan squad.
With the tournament in full swing, the new skipper has also been named by Sri Lanka.

Kusal Mendis to lead Sri Lanka in remaining matches
Kusal Mendis, who has been leading the Sri Lanka side from the front with the bat, will now have to take the captaincy charge immediately and lead the team with determination and skill.
Mendis will undoubtedly face the challenging task of steering his team in to top four with only eight matches remaining for the 1996 World Cup champions. Sri Lanka have to win a minimum of six games and keep a check on their net run rate to reach the semifinals.
As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on their newly appointed captain and Sri Lankan fans will be hoping for their team’s strong comeback and impressive performances in the remaining matches of the World Cup.
