Assam all-rounder, Riyan Parag, is currently enjoying a remarkable run in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy and grabbing headlines not just for scoring his seventh consecutive T20 half-century but also for his unique celebration during Assam’s recent match, which propelled them to the quarter-finals of SMAT 2023.

Assam’s victory over Bengal

The game took place in Mohali, where Assam’s captain, Parag, won the toss and opted to bowl first against Bengal.

Bengal struggled to reach 138/8, with Karan Lal (24), Abishek Porel (23), Abhimanyu Easwaran and Kaushi Maity, each contributing 21 runs. Akash Sengupta took three wickets for Assam, while Parag himself claimed two crucial wickets. In reply, Parag led Assam to a convincing victory, scoring an unbeaten 50 runs from 31 balls, which included four sixes and a couple of fours.

Riyan Parag’s heroic unbeaten half century and the celebratory gesture

This marked his seventh consecutive half-century in the tournament and a unique celebration afterwards, that has created a buzz on the internet. After reaching this milestone, he turned towards the pavilion and passed some signals through his hands, and his celebratory gesture generated mixed reactions. Some perceived it as a provocative gesture towards the opponents, while others saw it as a response to something specific.

Parag currently stands as the leading run-scorer in the tournament, amassing 490 runs from eight innings at an impressive average of 122.5. Assam’s next challenge in the quarter-finals will be against Kerala, a team they previously defeated in the competition.
